Advancing Disability Inclusion Through Sport

Citi is proud to be the founding partner of PARA SPORT, the International Paralympic Committee’s new grassroots-to-high performance program that aims to change the narrative around people with disabilities and provide Para athletes and their member organizations with a platform to drive societal progress.

Diversity and inclusion are key imperatives for Citi, and our support of Para sports and Para athletes gives us a powerful platform to change perceptions of people with disabilities. Being the founding partner of PARA SPORT is the latest step in Citi’s long-standing commitment to Para sports, through various partnerships with the International Paralympic Committee, Move United, and 50+ Para athletes over the past 10+ years.

The new PARA SPORT program has three core elements:

Awareness

Helping people with disabilities engage more actively in sport by raising awareness of Para sport opportunities and the benefits of the programs for them and their families.

Community

Creating inclusion through sport, which is often about the people we meet, the memories made along the way, and a togetherness felt by both individuals and their families.

Freedom

Giving people an opportunity to challenge themselves and help increase their confidence. Those involved in Para sport have a profound sense of freedom, empowerment, and a strong sense of personal identity

Disability Inclusion

  • Creating an inclusive environment for all is of the utmost importance to Citi. Disability inclusion enables Citi to deliver with excellence for our colleagues, our clients and our community.
  • To advance disability inclusion, Citi takes an inclusive approach for all employees. Data is an important step in this process. It enables Citi to measure how we can better support the projects, programs and initiatives that allow us to adapt and improve our work to support the successful careers for all Citi employees.
  • Colleagues are encouraged to self-identify their demographic information, including disability status, through our Self-Identification program. This information provides the clearest, most complete picture of the diversity of our team, and allows us to adequately support the inclusion of all Citi employees.
  • Participation in our Disability: Enabling Diverse Abilities employee networks helps make Citi an environment where everyone feels empowered to bring their authentic selves to work each day. Additionally, our colleagues are provided with the tools and resources to meet their full potential at Citi.
  • We also partner with strong external organizations such as Valuable 500 and Disability:IN to help advance our disability inclusion practices, promote inclusive hiring and provide educational resources to colleagues. And we’re proud to be recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” on the 2023 U.S. Disability Equality Index.
  • And, beyond these efforts, we encourage feedback from our colleagues through employee engagement surveys and listening tours. By keeping the lines of communication open, we are empowering colleagues to speak up to ensure we provide what they need.

#StareAtGreatness

Ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Games, Citi arrived at a powerful insight in conversations with Team Citi Para athletes: you shouldn't stare at a person with a disability. But what if that person was a three-time gold medalist? Or a world-record holder? Would it be okay to stare then? Team Citi Para athletes formed the basis for the “#StareAtGreatness” initiative, a campaign that highlights the talents and accomplishments of the disability community to help change perceptions of people with disabilities.
This campaign received wider recognition through being shortlisted and winning multiple awards globally, including:
